Renewable Energy in Odisha: Past, Present & Future

Odisha is an unique State in India with a mix of Thermal, Hydro & Solar Power generation inside the State along with huge untapped potential for harnessing of Renewable Power. In spite of its rich Coal Reserves supplying steady power at affordable rates, the State has regulatory provisions for procurement of power generated from Renewable Sources since FY 2011-12. GRIDCO Ltd. (formerly Grid Corporation of Odisha Ltd.), the State designated entity for Bulk Power Procurement of DISCOMs, is assigned with the task of compliance of Renewable Power Purchase Obligation (RPO) for the Discoms and other Obligated Entities. At present Odisha is 6th among States with compliance of RPO higher than the average in the Country. GRIDCO plans to increase the present proportion of Conventional to Renewable Power from the present 45:55 % to 55:45% in coming 10 Years with systematic addition of Renewable Capacity.
